The New Mexico Compilation Commission was created in 1941. Pursuant to Section 12-1-7 NMSA 1978, the Commission is statutorily responsible for compiling the state's session laws into the official New Mexico Statutes Annotated 1978, including court rules governing practice and procedure in the state courts. It is the official legal publisher of the New Mexico appellate courts. See "Brief History of the Compilation and Publication of New Mexico laws".

The Commission also serves as the publisher of special publications for the Secretary of State and the Taxation and Revenue Department while creating topical publications like New Mexico Criminal and Traffic Law Manual for law enforcement and the criminal justice system. The New Mexico Compilation Commission has a governance structure consisting of an advisory committee and a commission with representation from the constituencies it serves. See “About Us” for the members that lead and support the Commission.
